Guildford Library of Things is an award-winning community project that was founded in 2024 as a joint initiative between Zero Carbon Guildford and Guildford Library.
We used to have two libraries of things. Then, we thought, “Why not combine them?” So, we did! Now, we’re stronger together, helping more people in our community.
We’re a community project making it easy for locals to borrow tools, gadgets, and other handy items instead of buying them.
The idea is to save people money, reduce waste, and bring our community together.
The best part? It’s absolutely free to use!

Renovating our spare room
I was very excited to borrow a heat gun and a jigsaw from the Library of Things. We’re renovating our spare room, and so it was great to use the heat gun to strip the peeling paint off an old windowsill, and to cut out some wood for some new cabinet doors with the jigsaw. My husband also re-pointed the patio with the pointing set! These tools cost money and take up space, and aren’t really used very frequently, so it was wonderful to be able to borrow (and then return) them! Thanks so much to Guildford Library of Things

A refreshed table
My outdoor wooden table had become discoloured and a little mis-shapen. The sander cleaned it up and removed some of the lumps. Very happy with the result.

A hit at the local eco fair
I borrowed a gazebo for our stand at a local eco fair. The gazebo was in great condition, professional and fairly easy to put up. The service from Guildford Library of Things was excellent, with all staff being very helpful. I’d much rather re-use a shared item like this than have to purchase (and store) one that I won’t use very often. The Library of Things is a great idea.

Surviving wind storms and torrential rain
I took the pop up tent to a festival, which saved me buying one. It survived a wind storm, torrential rain and the madness of festival life and was so cosy despite the weather. It was also very easy to put up and easy to put away even after a few days of dancing more than sleeping!
